Friday 13th July – walk ***** To Hurst Castle – sunny and warm

Had a lovely morning with Hannah and Arlo and briefly Rob but he had to go to work then left heading down to Lymington to pick up a windsurfing harness I had bought from Facebook. It’s a little slow going to get through the Downs to the main coast road and then we took the wrong turning and ended up going past Robs Uni before ending up at Southampton waterfront. As it was lunch time we stopped on the pier with the Isle of Wight ferry terminal to the left and the massive Queen May 2 moored to the right. Mag made a salad which we ate at the end watching the ferries come and go, we even had a few spots of rain! As we haven’t been this way for a couple of years we quickly visited a couple of places on the way, Calshot and Lepe but didn’t stop as you have to pay in the carparks! Sat-nav we drove through some of the New Forest with cows and horses wondering across the road and soon found the man selling the harness before ending up at the nice free parking spot overlooking Hurst Castle. It was quite full and we missed the prime place at the end by one but still got a nice spot. With tea out of the way we went for a walk setting off at 7 o clock on a beautiful warm evening. We soon crossed the crabbing bridge and were up on the mile and a half shingle bank that leads to Hurst Castle and Lighthouse. It is a bit hard going walking on the shingle but it is flat as 4x4’s drive along here to cottages at the end! There were a few people about enjoying the lovely weather as the sun sank in the west, there were several fishermen, even a couple in sleeping bags ready to stop the night! We walked past the fort to the lighthouse and then did a circuit of the dead-end beach with a couple of yachts moored in the calm sheltered waters, this would be a great spot to windsurf on a windy SW day if you could get out here. We saw a bass jump clean out of the water but the three fishermen at the end didn’t seem to have much luck! Then all we had to do was walk back which was hard. We made it back to the wooden footbridge after being out a couple of hours and must have walked at least 4 miles. Mag went and put the kettle on while I took some sunset pics:)
